We welcome you to attend the Society of Michigan EMS Instructors Coordinators 63rd Professional Development Conference, Thinking for Change , which will be held October 7 - 10, 2010 at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Lansing Michigan. Presentations at the conference will focus on ways that instructors can encourage change in the EMS classroom by focusing on and thinking about positive program and classroom improvements before the need for change becomes obvious.  We will look at ways to promote thinking outside the box to make proactive changes to a successful program and how that is often more effective then waiting to make changes to a failing program.

We will also have sessions designed to receive input from attendees regarding important issues facing EMS education in Michigan and across the country. Your input will be important as The Society of Michigan EMS Instructor Coordinators continues to work with leaders in EMS education to enhance the future of education in our State.

Chris Le Baudour is well known in EMS education as a passionate and innovative speaker and educator who specializes in experiential scenario based education for all levels of EMS. Chris uses a “humanities” approach to EMS education and believes strongly in developing the whole person and not just the skills required to be a good field practitioner.

Chris brings real life experience, together with an off the wall sense of humor, to create a fun and low stress learning experience. Chris is a prolific writer and has several major EMS publications on the market. Chris and his wife Audrey have two children and live in Northern California.

Christopher Nollette is the EMS Director for the Riverside Community College EMS Academy in California.  He has a long history in EMS education both in California and Nevada.  He is the President elect of NAEMSE and serves on the Office of Homeland Security Education Taskforce.  Christopher challenges EMS instructors to engage their EMS students to bring the brain to a new level of awareness in and out of the classroom.  He is a nationally recognized speaker on EMS instructor improvement.

Dr. Stewart Wang Is the association chairman of the department of surgery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  He is a surgeon who has a very active clinical practice in trauma, emergency surgery and critical care at the University of Michigan Health Systems. He is the lead principle investigator for the US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN).  He focuses his efforts on the development of community outreach and education projects aimed at injury prevention.

Dr. Wang is the Medical Director of the State of Michigan Burn Coordinating Center, located at the University of Michigan and he will be presenting the on Michigan's plan for burn mass casualty incidents. This material will be the most recent updates and action plans for the Michigan burn mass casuality incident plan.

There will be many other speakers at the conference who will be presenting on a wide range of topics. For instance, we will have three new breakout sessions on Friday afternoon focusing on best practices for initial and continuing education. J. David Feichtner will be doing a session on M&E Tricks of the Trade and Thomas Gottschalk will map out the matrix of effective adult learner evaluation and testing. David Maatman will present a session on assessing for a potentially difficult airway. There will also be a session by Damon Obiden and Connie Maxim focusing on regional education resources.
